Ironside is walking 10km, step by step remembering the cherished memories of our loved ones lost to suicide by walking in their name.
I’m walking 10km on the 10th of September on the journey to honor and remember the cherished loved ones in my life who tragically chose to end their struggles through suicide instead of embracing the gift of life.Â
As I walk, I carry the names and memories of those who have succumbed to their inner thoughts, as I also walk for the countless individuals battling dark thoughts today, yesterday and tomorrow. My heart is heavy for those who may not fully grasp the depths of depression but desperately wish to understand that it is not a reflection of their worth, nor is it their fault.
This walk is not just a tribute, it’s a deep soulful personal reminder of my own journey. I overcome 11 suicide attempts. Each step I take is a testament to my resilience and survival, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to walk, to share my story, and to connect with others who have traversed similar paths. For the past 15+ years, I have lived with mental illness, and through it all, I have learned one crucial truth: you are not alone in this struggle.
Every year just in Australia, more than 65,000 individuals attempt to take their own lives, and over 3,000 Australians lose their lives to suicide.Â
These statistics highlight an urgent need for awareness and action. Lifeline, a vital resource in our community, receives over 1 million contacts from people in crisis each year, underscoring the immense demand for support and understanding in the face of overwhelming despair.
The impact of suicide extends far beyond the individual. it leaves a profound and devastating mark on friends, family, and the wider community. The pain and grief experienced by those left behind can be immeasurable, and it is essential that we come together to provide the care and support that is so desperately needed.
In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, I will be participating in the Out of the Shadows event, walking in memory of the 9 LIVES we lose to suicide every single DAY. This is a cause that is close to my heart, and I am committed to raising awareness and funds for Lifeline, ensuring that they can continue to provide essential suicide prevention services and support for Australians in need.
I invite you to join me in this important mission. Please consider supporting my walk by sponsoring me, helping to make a difference in the lives of those grappling with crisis. Together, we can foster a community of hope and healing, ensuring that no one has to face their darkest moments alone. Let’s stand together, united in our commitment to prevention, understanding, and compassion.Â
Love and light, Karlee Ironside.
