Walking together to remember our dad, Michael Aitken
Together with my mum and brother, we are walking in remembrance of my dad, who lost his life to suicide when I was 4 and my brother was 2. Every year, too many people lose their life to suicide. As a family, we are passionate about mental health and helping people connect with supports that could possibly save their life. As an individual who works in mental health, every day I see individuals struggling with their mental health and not having the services and supports in place, either due to not knowing how to access support, or because they fall through the cracks of the current mental health care system. My mission with this walk is not only to remember my dad, but support many others in the future in the hope that we can reduce the stigma associated with mental health and suicide, provide a safe space where people feel they can seek help, and overall improve our mental health care system.
My impact so far
I've raised $10,293 so far to answer 263 calls for Lifeline's crisis support hotline to connect and bring hope to people in crisis.
