Out of the Shadows 2024

Forever in our hearts

Daniel Jarman, Aunty Lola Millar and Aunty Jodie Talbot (Renner)

23/03/1994 - 29/08/2023

I'm walking for mabu liyan (good wellbeing)

Jarman sisters, friends and family are walking, running, scooters and cycling on Gulumoerggin (Larrakia Country) to remember and celebrate their brother Daniel Jarman (DJ), Aunty Lola Millar, Aunty Jodie Talbot (Renner) and other loved family and friends we’ve lost to suicide. We are doing this annual Lifeline ‘Out of the Shadows’ fundraising event to highlight the importance of mabu liyan (good wellbeing) for ourselves and others for World Suicide Prevention Day. We'd love you to join us.

We’ll be doing 9kms in memory of the 9 Australians who are lost to suicide every day.

Where: East Point. Meet at Lake Alexander carpark. Start/finish line at the park area across from Lake Alexander carpark (not beach side). Going around East Point anti-clockwise towards the mangrove boardwalk path and finishing each lap coming around past Pee Wee’s back to Lake Alexander (Darwin, NT).

Date: Saturday 7 September 2024

Time: 6:45am for a 7:00am start

Who: Everyone welcome. You can walk, run, scooter or bike ride with us, and either walk one lap or run the whole two laps to cover 9km. Each lap is around 5km and both runners and walkers should finish around the same time. We love our supporters and cheerleaders who may need to sit out on the sidelines and invite them to come meet us at the finish line.

Dress: Elle and Yasmin will be running in blue and white Casuarina Cougars shirts – their brother Daniel's beloved rugby team. Feel free to run in blue and white with us or something that connected you with Daniel, Aunty Lola, Aunty Jodie or other loved ones you are doing this for.

Bring: water, hat and sunscreen. There are two water bubblers along the track and we'll have water at the start/finish line. If there is someone else you are doing this for, please bring a photo of them if you can.

Please RSVP on our Facebook event page if you can, so we know numbers. Link here -

We can't wait to see you all walking and running with us. Up 'n at ‘em bright and early, and out of the shadows

With love, Elle and Yasmin Jarman, and families

MORE INFO:

Tragically, over 3,000 Australians lose their lives to suicide every year. We have been devastated since losing our beautiful brother Daniel, aunty Lola and aunty Jodie to suicide. We wish more than anything that they had reached out or called us, Lifeline or medical services.

Lifeline receives over 1 million contacts from people in crisis each year.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, Elle and Yasmin Jarman, family and friends will be running and walking 9km or 5km in loving memory of their proud Wadjigan, Yawuru, Larrakia and Torres Strait Islander saltwater brother, beautiful aunties and for the 9 Australians lost to suicide every day. Sadly, we have lost too many family members and friends to suicide. We will be walking and running for them too.

Together, we can make sure that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.

Our family are committed to doing what we can for our ‘mabu liyan’ (good wellbeing/spirits). Mabu liyan is the Yawuru concept of health and wellbeing through strong and healthy connections to body, mind, family, community, culture and Country. We invite everyone along on this part of our mabu liyan journey, helping clear our liyan.

We also invite the broader Darwin community who may be walking to remember a loved one, as a personal tribute for a friend or family member, or to show your support for Australians experiencing emotional distress or mental illness.

There's always help and love out there - just a phone call away from family, friends and other supports like Lifeline (Ph: 13 11 14), 000 emergency support and medical services.
