Out of the Shadows 2024

We're walking to remember those lost to suicide and help people in crisis

Some people can’t imagine what it would feel like to have thoughts so dark they would consider ending their own life. And those people are lucky. But there are millions of people who do, and when the darkest times hit, the irony is this is the time people are least likely to reach out to their loved ones for help. There's something about this kind of pain that stops people from saying what's really going on to those closest to them. Sometimes what they need is someone impartial.

Did you know that more than 65,000 Australians attempt to take their own life each year? Did you know it costs $39 every time someone from Lifeline takes a call? And that they get more than a million calls each year?? And that most of the counsellors volunteer their time for free? In fact, they pay out of their own pocket to do the qualification for it.

Lifeline is a resource that aims to ALWAYS be there, no matter what. A kind voice down the end of the phone that reminds people they’re not alone. There’s always at least one person who is available to listen, to witness, to help… we need this kind of support in our world, particularly in a world, post-Covid, where stress and mental health problems have exploded and it’s hard to get in to see a psychologist straight away.

So, as part of Suicide Prevention Day on Sept 10th, I am walking 27km to raise funds, remember the people who fought their battles bravely but couldn’t fight any more, and say thank you to the good people who volunteer their time for this much-needed resource in our community. I bet every one of us has been impacted or knows someone who has been impacted by suicide, so even if it’s $5… I would be so grateful to anyone who will support this cause. ❤️

Our impact so far

We've raised $1,007 so far to answer 25 calls for Lifeline's crisis support hotline to connect and bring hope to people in crisis.

With your support, we can ensure that no person has to face their darkest moments alone.
