Out of the Shadows 2024

Father’s Day

And so another Father’s Day passes and I sit to remember a man who was not a father figure to me either biologically or by marriage but rather by default and still a father figure the same. Jumbo was my brother’s father in-law, my sister in-laws dad and by default endearingly my “father in-law” too.

On Father’s Day now my heart is with his children and his grand children. The pain I feel of not having Jumbo around on Father’s Day is barely measurable to the pain they feel on this day.

Instead of messaging or calling Jumbo on Father’s Day, I now send a lonely red heart to his daughters, my sisters. I sit to remember a man who deserved the best Father’s Day every year. A father who loved the attention of Father’s Day and having his family around him, making the most of the time with them. I shed tears for a man who made me and Luka feel welcome to be part of his family each and everyday and showed us just as much love as if we were his own.

This year my thoughts are also on our upcoming walk and the impact we hope to have on those who are in the dark and feeling alone.
I didn’t get a chance to show Jumbo in the moments he needed it most that he was not alone, that he doesn’t walk alone and so we walk to show others they are not alone. I hope I’m doing you proud Jumbo, you know I wouldn’t walk 2km let alone 27km for nothing or no one and I hope you’re with me on the day.

Jumbo, Happy Father’s Day. We love you and miss you everyday ❤️

In honour of Jumbo

The Coffee Cup Crew is gathering in honour of Howard “Jumbo” Crossley.
Jumbo took his life in January 2023 and leaves behind a void for so many that will never be filled.
He is remembered daily by all of us who miss him and his antics. To know Jumbo was to love Jumbo, he made everyone laugh, was a great friend to many and was one of the first people to show up when help was needed.
Some of my fondest memories of Jumbo were sitting with him having a coffee and talking shit about anything and everything.
Anyone who knew Jumbo well knew that his coffee cup was never far, whether it had coffee or water in it he was always sipping away on it and it’s been said it was also used as a measuring tool at work. Hence the team name the Coffee Cup Crew.
On September 10th we will walk to not only honour and remember Jumbo but also the many others who have been taken by suicide or are like us and left behind with the heartache of missing someone they love.
Please join us if you can, let’s make it known that no one walks alone!

We're walking to remember those lost to suicide and help people in crisis

Tragically, every year over 65,000 Australians attempt to take their own life and over 3,000 Australians die by suicide.

Lifeline receives over 1 million contacts from people in crisis each year.

Suicide has devastating impact on friends and loved ones.

For World Suicide Prevention Day (Sept 10), we will be taking part in Out of the Shadows and walking for the 9 people lost to suicide every day.

We are walking to raise funds for Lifeline to provide suicide prevention services and support Aussies in need.

Please support our walk and make a donation to help those in crisis.

Together we can ensure that no one has to face their darkest moments alone.

Our impact so far

We've raised $4,263 so far to answer 109 calls for Lifeline's crisis support hotline to connect and bring hope to people in crisis.

With your support, we can ensure that no person has to face their darkest moments alone.
